Record Breaking Performances for PCST at Southeasterns!

PCST Rewrites Countless Categories of Records at Long Course Southeasterns!

Before a single Tsunami swimmer had even set foot in Nashville, PCST’s long course summer Southeastern Championships was already a record breaking meet!  Years ago, I set some personal goals for the team, knowing full well that it would take quite some time for us to get there.  Well, we have arrived!  Both Coach Brian and I had always wanted to qualify 50 swimmers, bring 40 swimmers, and have a relay in every age group and gender at the SES Championship meet.  While we have been getting closer and closer each year, 2013 proved to be a culmination of years of hard work for the Tsunamis as we achieved nearly every goal we had set forth.  In fact, we even broke a team record for having the absolute coolest shirts ever at the meet!  Our true “Panama City Beach” style airbrushed neon shirts were a HUGE hit with all coaches and swimmers on the deck.  We looked gooooooood!

Check out all of the great pre-meet records we broke!

PCST Records Broken Before The Meet
-50 swimmers qualified (previous record 42 in 2012)
-39 swimmers attended (previous record 31 in 2012).....PCST actually had 42 entered in the meet officially
-18 relays attended and 20 qualified (previous record 14 in 2012)
-qualified a relay in every age group and gender for first time ever!

Tsunamis Finish 18th Overall at LC Southeasterns!
Another really cool stat for the Tsunamis was that we began the meet as the 8th largest team at the championships.  How great is that?  Not too shabby considering there are nearly 70 teams in Southeastern Swimming!  One thing, however, that is out of our control is how well other teams swim.  Your Tsunamis had TONS of best times and all-time team records (as you’ll see here soon), but we were unfortunate in many circumstances where we finished 9th or 10th (just hundredths of second outside of major team points as you will also soon see).  As frustrating as that can potentially potentially be for a coach, it’s actually just fine because we swam so darn well all weekend long!  Unfortunately, 18th overall does not even remotely begin to describe how great your Tsunamis were all weekend long, so instead, keep reading to as I do my best to accurately depict just how great we were.

Jonathan Ratliff Qualifies For Prestigious US Open in 200 Fly!
For those of you who do not fully understand just how difficult it is to qualify for the US Open, here’s a quick explanation.  The qualifying standards for the 2013 US Open in Irvine, CA are the EXACT same qualifying times that it took to compete in the 2012 Olympic Trials.  While Michael Duderstadt was the first ever Tsunami to reach that level, he wasn’t alone for long.  An EPIC CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Jonathan Ratliff for skipping right over the incredibly difficult Summer Junior National Championships by qualifying straight for the US Open in the 200 Fly with an astonishing time of 2:03.81.  He has now positioned himself as one of the top 200 butterflyers in the entire country for his age.  Way to go JRat!!

Duderstadt Claims Another Southeastern Title in 100 Breast!
In 2012, Michael Duderstadt came within a couple tenths of a second of becoming a Southeastern Champion for the first time ever at the summer LC championships.  He had to wait until February for that to come to fruition as he won 3 events (100 Br, 200 Br, 100 Fr) at the winter SES meet.  Now, Duder has become only the second swimmer in PCST history to win a Long Course Southeastern Championship title, and the first ever to win both a long course and short course race.  His time of 1:04.21 in the breast was a second faster than his previous best, and over a second and a half faster than the second place finisher at the meet.  It also earned him a second long course US Open qualifying time and helped further secure his position as the greatest swimmer in PCST history (so far………..am I right Tsunamis coming up through the ranks??)  Congrats Duder, on yet another amazing SES Championships.

Marisa Ashley Joins Duderstadt and Ratliff With Runner Up Finishes!
To further prove just how great we were at the meet in Nashville, I would like to celebrate our runner-up finishes.  Mr. Ratliff and Mr. Duderstadt have put together countless great swims for PCST over the years at the SES Championships.  This year was no different as Duder added a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM to his 100 Breast victory, while Jonathan’s US Open qualifying 200 Fly performance earned him a runner-up spot at the meet as well.  However, the newest PCST superstar is one of our brightest rising Tsunamis, Marisa Ashley!  Her 5:31 in the 400 Free proved that she is one of the top 10 & under swimmers in all of Southeastern Swimming, and we could not be prouder.  Congratulations all three of you on your incredible championship meets!

25 PCST Team Records Fall!
My goal coming into the meet was to break 25 team records.  Considering how many PCST all-time marks have fallen this summer already, some would have thought me crazy to have such an aspiration.  Little did they know!  We came to race and continued to smash PCST records left and right.  And in case you’re not on stat overload already, the rewriting of many of these team records means that the Tsunamis have now broken roughly 90% of all our all-time records since 2006 when we had the fortunate combination of getting our first full time head coach as well as a beautiful new facility at Frank Brown Park.  It’s been amazing to see what we have accomplished, but not as great as it will be to see how fast the future Tsunamis are going to swim.

Five Different Tsunamis Finish In Top 8 Overall!
As I told you before, the team competition was tough!  It’s very difficult for us to swim so well at a meet and end up 18th overall rather than top 15 or even top 12.  One of the reasons is because the entire LSC of Southeastern Swimming has gotten considerably better in recent years.  This means that times that would have easily finished in the top 8 in the past, are now finishing in the 9-16th ranges.  So please, join me in congratulating our top PCST swimmers for their awesome and very difficult to achive Top 8 swims, as well as the tons and tons of other athletes who finished just outside of the scoring mark.  (Please note, however, that Senior swimmers in the 9th-16th range scored very valuable points for PCST!)

18 Different PCST Swimmers Earn New All-Time Top 10 Spots!
Ahhhhhh, the all-time top 10 list.  My old buddy.  Can you believe that nearly half of the PCST swimmers in the meet earned new positions in the all time top 10 list?  This is even more impressive because this is a list of the fastest swims in team history regardless of age.  So naturally, 12 & unders are not going to make this list very often.  This means that a large majority of our 13 & older swimmers are already among the best of all time.  And since so many of them have years ahead of them with PCST before they graduate high school, I would imagine this list is going to be completely rewritten here over the next few years.  Congratulations to all of our Tsunamis who earned new top 10 times!
