Largest Bay County Group Ever at State Championships!

Bronnenberg, Olstad and Mosely Boys Relays Make Championship Finals in Orlando!

Out of the four high school seasons in which I’ve been Head Coach of PCST, this was the first one where I was able to actually be at the high school State Championships and boy oh boy was it worth the drive!  Most of our swimmers had to rest for the Regional Championships in order to qualify for States and it was worth it because we sent our largest group of qualifiers ever to the meet, including 12 swimmers in individual events and 5 relays!

Some would be pleased with that and their season would virtually be over at that point.  Not our Tsunamis!  They went to Orlando for States and meant business!  Cody Bronnenberg made championship finals in two races (200 IM, 100 Breast), Kyle Olstad made it in one (100 Breast) and Mosely Boys 200 relays both made it to the big dance (Medley, Free)!  The weekend was highlighted by Mosely Boys finishing 7th overall as a team, their Boys 200 Free Relay finishing 3rd place and getting what I like to call a "Podium Finish", and Cody Bronnenberg swimming a time that qualified him not only for the NCSA Junior National Championships, but also for an All-American Consideration time in the 100 Breast!  Oh yeah........and there’s plenty more where that came from so read on!

Cody Bronnenberg (Deserves His Own Paragraph)
Warmly known as "Co Co"!! on the pool deck.........at least when I’m around........Arnold Junior Cody Bronnenberg took on one of the toughest State Championships and came out with some impressive results.  Not only was Cody the only swimmer to make the Championship finals in 2 races, he also swam a time (59.40) in the 100 Breast that would have made him a state champion had he raced in the 2A championships with the Mosely swimmers.  Cody also became only the 4th PCST swimmer in the last 3 years to have a qualifying time for the NCSA Junior National Championships (in Orlando in March) in the 100 breast.  His 200 IM (1:57.17) was also a "bonus" event qualifying time for the Junior National meet, which means he will have at least 2 swims there in March.

Oh Yes.......PCST Records Were Improved Too!

Michael Whitehead Makes Consolation Finals as a Freshman!
He may not realize it, but Michael Whitehead did something that very few freshman have ever done in Bay County history.  Not only was it impressive for him to make it to the State Championships, but he also qualified for the consolation finals (9th-16th) in the 500 Free and even beat a couple swimmers in finals to move up to 14th overall!  In addition to his great 500 free, he also led off the Mosely Boys 200 Medley Relay that finsished 5th overall with a 26.8 in the 50 back!  Awesome job Michael!

Victoria Hove Leads a Terrific Sophomore Class with a Consolation Final Landslide Victory!
The morning swim for Victoria Hove in the 200 IM was a solid race, only a half second off her lifetime best.  However, she spoke to her coach (that’s me, hehe), got a little bit of feedback on her race, then proceeded to do everything perfectly in consolation finals and absolutely SMASHED the heat dropping 2 more seconds off of her best time!  Her 2:10.44 was only 0.95 seconds off of becoming our 5th NCSA Junior Nat qualifier in the last 3 years!  It was an impressive swim, just as were swims from fellow sophomores, Chet Seaman and Michael Commins.  Chet made consolation finals in the 100 Breast with a personal best 1:02.95 and was on the 5th Place 200 Medley Relay with a 28.3 breast split.  Michael swam the 500 free and broke 50 seconds (49.75) for the first time ever on the consolation final winning 400 Free Relay!

Kyle Olstad’s Top 8 Finish Leads Junior Class!
We all knew Kyle was good, so it wasn’t a surprise to any of us that she finished in the top 8 at the State Championships.  However, the good news is that now Kyle too understands just how good she is and who knows where she can go from here!  Her 1:08.98 in the 100 Breast put her in an elite class of breaststrokers not only with PCST but also in the entire state!  Another Junior that had great swims was Allison Troia from Bay High who was one of only 4 swimmers to qualify for States in two individual events.  Sammy Reyes from Mosely also had a best time in the 50 Free (23.04) as hed led off the boys 200 free relay to a school high 3rd place finish!!  In addition to that, Sammy swam a lifetime best in the 100 free (50.4) as he helped the Mosely boys dominate the consolation heat of the 400 free relay.

Bay County Seniors Shine in Final High School State Championships!
Mary McDermott finally did what we knew she could do and that’s qualify in both events for the State Championships.  Mary worked very hard to earn her best times in her freestyle events this year and was a very important part of the Mosely girls 400 free relay that finished 14th overall!  Michael Perdomo had a VERY impressive season as he proved once and for all that he is one of the most dominating swimmers in Bay County history.  He was one of the most consistent and reliable swimmers Mosely has ever seen as he finished in the consolation finals in the 200 Free (16th), split a lifetime best (22.5) in the 200 free relay to earn a podium finish (3rd Place) and led off the boys with his second best ever 100 free (50.3) as their 400 free relay smashed everyone in the console heat.  Finally, Brielle Seaman, who had the breakthrough season she’s been waiting for, swam great in the girls 400 free relay that took out a couple of teams and finished 14th overall.  It feels good to have that hard work pay off, doesn't it Brielle?? :)

Our Goal for Next High School Season
Are you ready for the challenge Tsunamis????  Last year my goal was to get over 10 swimmers qualified for individual races.  We jumped from 6 to 12 from 2008 to 2009.  In 2010, I want 15 or more swimmers from Bay County (preferably at least 15 from PCST) to qualify for the State Championships in individual races.  What do you say??  Ready to get to work?

CATCH THE WAVE!
